Trashed.

There’s something about being intoxicated that tends to leave you feeling pretty good. I’m not sure if it’s just the general inebriation or the lack of the self-control that does it for me. Anyways, needless to say, I drank more alcohol than I have in a long time and I’m waiting for the effects to wear off. I shall be sleeping soon I think. Although, might make a phone call.

Been kind of busy lately – getting stuck into thesis, watching TV shows, work, and general laziness :P I spent most of Thursday trying to get my stuff working in Linux. I’ve not programmed Java for over 2 years – I remember the constructs but not the finer details of things that are “static” and not static. I remember what encapsulation *is*, but not the best way to implement it. *sigh*. And I’m basically Linux illiterate – so it’s a little frustrating when you know what you want to do, but lack the knowledge of how to do it. >.<

Anyways, as I mentioned yesterday, I read this article about food allergies. As most of my friends know, I suffer from a few food allergies, the most severe being peanuts. I was reading through the comments on the page and found it quite interesting the things people had written, whether they be allergy sufferers or not. I think over the past 5 years, the awareness of food allergies has certainly increased although the misinformation associated with it has not.

I’m not a fan of ‘nut-free’ schools. I don’t believe that school children should be kept in a ‘bubble’. People who have allergies should learn to manage them and always be aware of the risks, because no one but themselves is responsible for their health and wellbeing. That being said, I too, wondered why a company like Subway would introduce a satay product onto their menu. Considering the type of food that subway sells, I would not hesitate to say that they are likely to attract people who suffer from food allergies. Simply because their food is fresh, and you can see what’s gone into your meal. However, adding something like satay chicken onto the menu means there’s a higher chance of contamination. Why risk an already established customer base by introducing a menu item that’s likely to see them never come back again? It doesn’t make sense.

Anyways, those laminated cards with the translations for food allergies sound like a bloody brilliant idea to me. I can’t believe someone didn’t think of them sooner. I’m looking to travel overseas later this year and I wasn’t going to go to any South-East Asian countries (and this hasn’t changed my mind), but I know that I still need to be really careful. I just hope that I’ll have enough dosh to afford to travel >.<

Goddammit.

So, I had a whole thing about this blog post that I read today. Except, when I went to save my own blog entry, it didn’t, and sent me to the login page. So I’ve lost whatever it was that I wrote. It’s too late now to re-write it. If I feel like it, I might do so tomorrow. *sigh*.

Some thoughts on…

So I was reading the Sydney Morning Herald yesterday when I came across this article. In actual fact, I was halfway through the article before I checked who had written it. And that was because it sounded like such propaganda to me. I wasn’t disappointed.

I’m not one that usually uses my blog as a platform for getting on my soapbox and having my 2 cents worth. One, because I’m not particularly good at constructing arguments (discussions) in written form and also because I don’t like how easily misconstrued your arguments can become. Added to this is my lack of research and some gross generalisations. However, I feel the need to at least highlight some of the downfalls of what is touted to be ‘good economic policy’ by those in government.

The basis of most economic theory is founded upon a 2-5 sector model of the economy. The Goverment sector has income in the form of taxes and expenditure in the form of unemployment benefits and other ‘public goods’. Costello freely admits that Government spending as a percentage of GDP has fallen in the 10 years to 2005-06. This is not surprising in the least.

As a university student, the most obvious example of reduced government spending is in tertiary education. I pay my uni fees upfront, because my parents can afford to. However, many of my friends choose not to, or are unable to pay the $2,000-3,000 fees required each semester. This leaves them with no choice but to leave uni with a HECS debt. For your average 3 year degree, this debt will be in the vicinity of $18,000. For others, this could blow-out to $30,000. In today’s terms, that’s a deposit on a house. Whilst I’m not an advocate of free tertiary education for all, I don’t believe that increasing the cost of tertiary education is in the interest of our country. Australia is currently in need of skilled workers in many industries. Whilst some of those vacancies can be filled by migrants, it is in our best interest to also foster those about to enter the workforce. Otherwise we will see that talent go elsewhere – overseas. In all honesty, that’s an issue which is entirely separate to my original one, so I really should leave it there.

What I really did want to point out is this: the Federal Government is responsible for spending on health care, infrastructure, education, defence, environmental protection and lots of things I can’t think of. We know that the Government has cut spending on health care, education and infrastructure. With the war in Iraq still in full swing, and a confirmed policy, spending on defence is committed for at least the next 5 years. Fine. But does anyone ever really question why it is that they pay for private health insurance, private school, tertiary education and pay tolls to use roads? Why is it, that the GST is considered a ‘State’ tax when it is clearly collected by the Federal Government and redistributed back to the States in an uneven manner? And why is it, that when the Government introduced the GST, which is a growth tax, that its spending has decreased?

What’s a growth tax you ask? Well, I remember back in Year 11 when I was studying 2U Economics, and the GST had yet to be introduced, I asked my economics teacher why our Government had set the GST rate at 10% instead of the 15% that had been proposed by the previous Liberal party (led by Andrew Peacock, if I recall correctly). The idea is that, as consumers spend more, the Government will collect more GST. As the economy grows, the Government’s tax intake will grow accordingly. Such that the GST rate does not need to be high, just at a rate where Government is receiving enough income to cover its expenses. That’s all well and good, except Australia’s economy has been growing for well over 10 years and in that time, we have seen a general deterioration in investment in this country by the Government. I guess I just don’t understand how people can welcome tax cuts, and yet turn around to say that they ‘pay their taxes’ and as such demand good health care, public transport and education. Quite simply, you can’t have it both ways. If you want to pay less taxes and you’re happy for the Government to keep its (apparently gigantic) surplus, then the flipside is that you *won’t* be receiving these basic services because they’re not being invested in. Moreover, if the economy does (and will) go into recession and people can no longer afford to pay for these services from the private sector, this is when we’ll see the public demanding that the Government put more into providing these services. What worries me is that for our generation, the damage has already been done.

P.S: I have come to realise two things about writing this sort of article:
I am no good at writing a structured argument in a blog, because when I blog I’m essentially writing my ’stream of consciousness’. That is, I write whatever comes into my head at that time and whilst I do filter for it to make sense, I’m usually just writing how I feel. To bring that style of writing to a topic that requires discussion tends to fall over. You can’t write what is essentially an essay in that way. After re-reading what I wrote, some of it doesn’t flow very well and frankly, I didn’t reach a conclusion. At the same time, I’m not sure there is one. I’m not sure anybody else really cares either.

Secondly, I became distracted halfway through writing this and hence why I am now posting this today, instead of yesterday when I started it. Don’t worry, we’ll be going back to the regular show tomorrow (or later today).

Edit: As a follow-up, you may like to read this article by Ross Gittins and this letter to the editor from today’s SMH.

Goddamn memory of a goldfish!

So, I formatted Tichondrius yesterday. He’s all shiny and FAST now. And IE doesn’t give some stupid error when I close it. Not that I use IE much – but it’s nice not to have that anyways. The taskbar also doesn’t disappear randomly when I try to open Windows Explorer now. LOL. It’d been like 42 weeks or something since I’d last reformatted so it really was time for it. What shits me though, is that everytime I reformat there’s always *something* I forget. This time, it wasn’t really that I forgot, more that I didn’t back up thoroughly. Normally I archive all my e-mails and contacts… This time, I did that but didn’t check that it had got all my e-mails. It seems it only archived up to 19/09/05 and not to yesterday (which is what I told it to do). I really should have checked it. So yeah, if there’s an important e-mail you’ve sent me in the last 6 months… I don’t have it anymore. You’re more than welcome to re-send it :P In fact, I’d probably really appreciate it *slaps head*.

Hrm, to add to my memory woes, I left my wallet at home today. This was slightly annoying as I had no money for the bus so I called my dad to pick me up. More annoying than that, I couldn’t buy a drink at lunch. No sugar!

I’ve been playing DJ Max Portable (as previously mentioned) and I’ve been able to get to Stage 4. Completed a few songs at 5 difficulty, so I’m pretty happy :D I’m having a lot of trouble with the combinations that require one button to be held whilst tapping two others – it just requires too much co-ordination that I don’t have. Recently I talked to ConMan about DDR and how you could possibly follow all those steps with a difficulty of 8 feet. Anyways, he was explaining that you don’t really see the arrows and think “have to press right” or “have to press left”. You sort of just see combinations and the stuff streams. I think I understand that more now, having played this game, because I’m no longer just looking at one note as it’s coming down the screen, I’m looking at 4 or 5 notes to see what’s coming next.

I’ve also found an alternative use for this game. Yesterday, I went for a run in my local park. Normally I bring my Neeon so I’ve got music to listen to. But it was out of batteries. So I thought, no worries I’ll my other USB MP3 player. Except that needs AAA batteries and luck would have it that I have none at home. So what did I resort to? My MD. My MD!! Gosh, MD technology. Anyways, it’s still working fine :D and that mix disc I created is still good :P Certainly made my run pretty fun listening to all these old songs I haven’t heard in ages. Anyways, as I was mucking around with DJ Max Portable last night, I found that it has an “OST” and “Vids” mode, where you can listen to and watch the videos of the songs that the game uses. This is pretty cool, and seeing as the PSP was the only thing that was charged I listened to cutesy pop music on the way to and from work. Not bad at all.

Other than that, I don’t have much to say. I haven’t felt very social or talkative lately. Not sure why. I haven’t been very happy, and that’s understandable I suppose. I know that I’m bottling or whatever, but I think it’s more just that, I don’t have anything good to say. And moreso, I know that whatever I’m going to say is probably something I’ve said before, or just re-iterating how I feel so what’s the point? That feeling hasn’t changed and going on and on about it is only going to bore those who are willing to listen anyways. Partly I think it’s also because sometimes I’ve really wanted to talk to someone, and the response I’ve gotten was “yeah, yeah” and then *big long rant about their problems*. And that’s fine – I get that other people have their gripes too, but at least acknowledge mine. I guess when that happens you just sort of think, why should I bother trying to express how I feel if you’re not even listening? I don’t expect you to fix my problems, or even tell me a solution. That’s for me to find out. But if no one’s listening, then I’m not talking.

Decisions…

So I finally decided to upgrade the firmware on my PSP. I got sick of having 5 (legit) games that I couldn’t play… there’s no point forking out the money for them if you can’t actually play them huh?

So yeah, I upgraded to v2.0. I figure that if the homebrew scene ever really takes off, I’ll be able to downgrade and go back to it. Considering I’d tried a few of the new game loaders that supposedly work on v1.5 for v2.0 games and they didn’t work… not much of a choice there anyways.

First game I tried out was DJ Max Portable. This is a Korean game, apparently has been released on PS2. It’s basically DDR but for songs. Unfortunately, even the Easy Mode with 1 difficulty is amazingly hard. Either that, or I’m rhythmically challenged. Or my reflexes are amazingly slow. I finally finished two of the stages at 1 difficulty. The ONLY two. Now I’m stuck – I can’t play those on 2 difficulty and when I complete the ones on 1 difficulty it goes to Stage 2… which only has songs from difficulty 3 and up. One day, I’m going to try the 6 button songs…..

Having given up on that for the time being I thought I’d try out Koloomn which is also known as Ultimate Block Party. Another puzzle game of course, it reminds me of Puyo Pop Fever, although it’s more complex because of all the specials. I’m still getting used to it, but it’s pretty fun.

Games left to try out:
- GTA: Liberty City Stories
- Gottlieb Pinball Classics
- Frantix

In the mean time, I shall try to stop buying any more games.

Happy Hour by bk
“Let me tell you something else, Granger,” he said with a rough sleep-tinged drawl to his voice. “You shouldn’t go changing yourself for that someone special. Because no one else in this whole messed up world should have the power to make you change for the better. That’s the best lesson in all of us. Don’t change for someone else. Never change yourself for someone else. Even if it’s with the best of intentions. Fundamentally, a person has to change for themselves. They have to make a conscious choice to become a better version of themselves. And you’ve pretty much peaked. So I don’t see how it’s possible for you to be better.”

His smile finally broke through the clouds. “You realize we’re perfect for each other, right?”

She rubbed her nose against his cheek. “Yes, perfectly insane.”

Oh, well imagine; as I’m pacing the pews in a church corridor,
and I can’t help but to hear, no I can’t help but to hear an exchanging of words.
“What a beautiful wedding!”, “What a beautiful wedding!” says a bridesmaid to a waiter.
“And yes, but what a shame, what a shame, the poor groom’s bride is a whore.”

Well in fact, well I’ll look at it this way, I mean technically our marriage is saved
Well this calls for a toast, so pour the champagne
Oh! Well in fact, well I’ll look at it this way, I mean technically our marriage is saved

I’d chime in with a “Haven’t you people ever heard of closing
the god damn door?!”
No, it’s much better to face these kinds of things with a sense of poise and rationality.
